*points at Labour and laughs*
Wow, the Lib Dems took 11 seats off Labour in Haringey! It’s still a Labour council, but it does show you how far the borough’s come – until 1992 Hornsey and Wood Green was represented by a Tory MP, now it’s gone through Labour and come out Lib Dem, and is only a couple of seats short of a Lib Dem council. And as for Islington, where the Lib Dems lost control, it may be less what they know that we don’t and what we know that they don’t. Islington’s a weird place, after all. And look at Lewisham! That’s where I’m going to end up eventually – Lewisham has more Green councillors than Tories! And they’ve got two Socialist Alliance members! I bet council meetings are fun in Lewisham…
Oh, and then the reshuffle! Oh, Charles Clarke! Oh, John Prescott! Oh, how I laughed!
I wouldn’t be too worried by the supposed Tory resurgence either; the map of London looks worryingly blue mainly cos the councils that have gone Tory are those on the outskirts and they happen to be bigger. And frankly, the Tories did quite well in local elections in 2004 and got their asses kicked in the general election. Locals are people’s chance to give the government a beating – and I think we did… and yet Blair hasn’t resigned. What do we have to do?!
