Just went to see Enemies at the Almeida. I’ve never been to the Almeida before; I went to see Coriolanus when they were refurbishing but a shed in Old Street doesn’t count (Liz and I have this thing about Coriolanus. We did it for A Level and hated it, and yet feel compelled to go see it at every opportunity to re-convince ourselves it’s really that terrible. We’ve seen it with Toby Stephens, we’ve seen it with Steven Berkoff, we’ve seen it with Ralph Fiennes. It’s always awful). Anyway, the Almeida’s a great theatre, great acoustics. And Enemies is great – wonderful ensemble acting, that rare thing: a play that is good. Most theatre is overrated but this, and The History Boys, reaffirmed my faith. And, y’know, Jack Davenport doesn’t hurt.
Oh don’t worry, Coriolanus at the Globe this summer will destroy it again.
