Oh, you utter bastards

The RMT have called two national strikes of rail signallers, one of 24 hours this Friday/Saturday and one of 48 hours next Thursday-Saturday. Which was exactly when I was planning to go back to Leeds for the weekend, so unless it’s all called off, looks like I’m taking two days off work rather than an afternoon and packing into the last train heading North.

Thank God I booked first class tickets, I might actually stand a chance of getting a seat. Being middle class sometimes pays, eh?

19 July – Edited to Add: And of course, now the strike has been called off. I get really angry with this – it’s cheapening the value of striking by waving it around willy nilly. If something’s important enough to strike over, STRIKE! Don’t call one then call it off less than 24 hours later! I suppose it could be possible that the threat of strike action made the employers more willing to negotiate, but at this point I don’t know who backed down over what – and frankly, if your Union negotiators can only get acceptable settlements by threatening strike action, then they’re not very good…

I think travelling first class is actually upper class.

It’s still GNER going North, the plebs do manage to get in and lower the tone sometimes 😉
