Slovenia

Since we no longer need to worry about Slovenia from a footballing point of view (stupid USA. If England had qualified first in the group I wouldn’t have to a) belt it out of the Valencia grand prix circuit on Sunday the moment the champagne has been sprayed to find a bar showing the second round and b), assuming we beat Germany – and let’s face it, despite what the commentary will say (praises for being in Spain) Germany is hardly the great enemy any more. Were they ever? Surely our current bogey team is Portugal – anyway, assuming England beat Germany I have managed to book a National Theatre matinee for the same time as the quarter final, so I may just about catch the last half hour standing at the back of some packed pub on the South Bank).

Why did USA have to score? Stupid USA, I say again.

Er, yes, Slovenia. Now I can show you pictures of Slovenia that I took on a trip – blimey, according to the datestamp – over four years ago. Slovenia is lovely. You should go. I am still in two minds whether to tell you the name of the village in the mountains, or whether I leave you to work it out for yourselves. It’s too nice, I don’t want it spoiling.

Here is Ljubljana, including some dicking about with black and white film (I did say it was 2006). You can click to biggify:

And this is the village in the mountains. OK, it’s called Ribcev Laz and is on Lake Bohinj, about another hour on the bus beyond Lake Bled. Why most people never get beyond twee Lake Bled with its fairytale island church and massive Soviet concrete hotels I don’t know, but I’m fine with it.

This is the main road, by the way.

This place is wrestling with Tokyo for the honour of my favourite place in the world. Bit different, aren’t they?
