Common people

Following on from the previous Pulp post, I was directed to Dorian Lynskey’s blog where he dissects the impetus behind Common People. It reminded me that my favourite part of the song is the bit that gets cut out of the radio edit – the bit that Jarvis howls and makes me want to bellow along with him. Not heard it?

Like a dog lying in a corner
They will bite you and never warn you
Look out, they’ll tear your insides out
‘Cos everybody hates a tourist
Especially one who thinks it’s all such a laugh
And the chip stains and grease
Will come out in the bath

You will never understand
How it feels to live your life
With no meaning or control
And with nowhere left to go
You are amazed that they exist
And they burn so bright
While you can only wonder why

I’ve been running from the impulse behind that song my whole life. It’s still only over my shoulder even now.
