A portrait of war

One of the Germans my Dad plays petanca with is called Ziggy. He recently mentioned how he was in charge of a tank during the last months of the Second World War, after the Wehrmacht went round schools removing all boys old enough to fight.

“How come you were in charge?” asked my Dad.

Ziggy shrugged. “I was the oldest,” he said.

He was 15.
